(Your Step-by-Step Guide to Passing the Cambridge B2 First)
Feeling overwhelmed by the FCE exam?
You're not alone.
Every year, thousands of students take the Cambridge B2 First (FCE) — and many feel stressed, confused, and unsure where to begin.
Let’s fix that.
As a certified CELTA teacher, I’ve helped many students prepare more effectively ,not harder so they can pass the FCE with confidence.
Step 1: Know the Format So There Are No Surprises
The FCE has 4 parts:
Reading & Use of English – 1 hour and 15minutes
Writing – 1 hour and 20 minutes
Listening – 40 minutes
Speaking – 14 minutes (with a partner)
Each paper has different skills and strategies. This is not about memorising answers, it’s about using real English effectively.
Step 2: Spot the Patterns in Use of English
Don’t get stuck on grammar rules — get good at spotting structures and word families.
Open cloze
Word formation
Keyword transformations
“Don’t just study the what, study the how.” – That’s my #1 tip for Use of English.
Step 3: Master Writing with Simple, Powerful Templates
All you need is a solid plan and practice.
Use these simple outlines:
Essay Template
- Introduction
- 3 Body Paragraphs (each with a clear idea)
- Conclusion
Review or Article Template
- Hook (interesting start)
- Personal experience/opinion
- Recommendation or closing thoughts
Don’t forget linking words: However, On the other hand, In addition, As a result...

Step 4: Listen With Intention
FCE listening isn't just about understanding , it's about hearing detail and purpose.
Practice like this:
- Listen once to get the main idea
- Listen again to catch tone, contrast, or change
- Predict the type of answer before hearing it
Use official FCE audio
BBC Learning English
TED Talks at B2 level
Finally, avoid cramming; instead, actively engage with the material and test yourself.
Remember, passing the FCE isn’t about perfection. it’s about preparation, strategy, and confidence. Follow these steps, practise regularly, and trust the process.
